West has succumbed to madness over Israel, Phillips says | Jewish Tribune

The West has succumbed to madness when it comes to Israel, declared British journalist, author and commentator Melanie Phillips at a recent lecture at Adath Israel Congregation co-sponsored by StandWithUs. This madness takes the form of demonizing Israel despite the fact that the country occupies the moral high ground in the fight against Islamic terrorism.
Phillips opened her remarks with a joke.
“I feel at home here,” she said. “The weather, the objective media, the acts of terrorism.”
However, the global situation is no laughing matter.
“Israel and the Jewish people are under an attack of delegitimization,” Phillips said. “The rest of the world is falling for Muslim rhetoric. The puzzle is that people are falling for this.”
During this summer’s Operation Protective Edge, anti-Israel and anti-Semitic rallies took place across the globe. “People in Canada and Britain bought into Hamas falsehoods,” Phillips asserted. “They accepted the claims pumped out by the media as unchallenged fact. It wasn’t surprising that there were demonstrations against Israel after seeing pictures of dead Palestinian babies.
“You would think that political leaders would have the decency to stop this,” Phillips remarked. “On the contrary, virtually nothing was said.”
In fact, the British parliament passed a non-binding resolution in the middle of October to recognize a Palestinian state. The American government is no better – after a Palestinian teenager was killed by the IDF while hurling Molotov cocktails at passing motorists, the US State Department sent condolences to his family and refused to acknowledge him as a terrorist.
Global attitudes towards the Jewish people and Israel are a result of Arab-Muslim rhetoric, Phillips contended.
“I would suggest that the hallmark of the Muslim world is the reversal of truth,” she said. “Islam is perfection. It can’t be improved upon. Faithful adherents can do no wrong. If they do wrong, it has to be the fault of the person that caused the wrong. Muslim aggression becomes defence, defence by non-Muslims becomes aggression.”
As a result of this reversal, Palestinians allege that Jews have no right to Israel because it isn’t their homeland. Phillips cited Saeb Erekat’s claim that he is a Canaanite.
“It’s heartening that he can trace his family to the Bronze Age,” she deadpanned. Phillips turned serious again, saying, “All this resembles the mad looking glass world of Soviet totalitarianism.”
That’s no accident – the efforts to reverse history and the truth were undertaken by Yasser Arafat and the Soviet Union in the 1960s.
So, why has the West fallen for these tricks?
“The West has stopped knowing what it once stood for,” Phillips answered. “It stopped knowing its own values.”
She pointed to the culture wars in Britain that have succeeded in obliterating the idea of objective truth, destroying moral authority and replacing it with man-made ideologies.
“If there’s no truth,” Phillips explained, “there can’t be lies. The people that are the most receptive to fabrication are the intelligentsia; they’re in the forefront of the destruction of truth and evidence.”
The intelligentsia champions the cause of universal human rights, which Phillips defined as man-made law that sets rights against one another. Universal human rights have replaced real human rights, which protect individuals and property. This mockery of human rights excuses any group who has ever suffered from oppression from accountability for its behaviour, except for the Jews.
How can Jews defend Israel on this highly skewed playing field? Phillips offered a few tips. She advised the audience to point out to Israel’s critics that Hamas supports genocide, spouts demented conspiracy theories and hates homosexuals and women. Furthermore, Israel’s supporters can refute the claim of an occupation by citing treaties that affirm Israel’s right to build communities in Judea and Samaria. Finally, Zionism and Judaism can no longer be separated.
“Judaism is a three-legged stool – the people, the laws and the land,” Phillips said. “If you knock over a leg, it will fall over. If you take away the land, you take away the basis of Judaism.”
